The Monarch Diagnostic Clinic
In Home Training
The main purpose of in home training is to help a Monarch student generalize skills learned at school to the home setting. Another function is to teach objectives that are home based in nature such as morning or evening routines. Sometimes the home trainer may observe a competency demonstrated at home that is not being seen at school. This could lead to targeting a goal for school.
The format of the in home training session is for the trainer to model effective teaching strategies working directly with the student while the parent observes. After several sessions a parent is given a time to practice a teaching strategy with feedback. Some preview and review discussions can occur, but if more intensive direct instruction is needed for the parent it is within a parent training format. In home trainers are never alone with a child as there is always a parent or guardian present.
In home training can also take place in various community settings as appropriate for the individual student’s working objectives. Goals for in home training are decided by the team of professionals working with a student and in consultation with the parents. A system of tracking to monitor progress and a follow up date to evaluate and adjust goals is also decided by the team.
In home training is also available when appropriate to families not enrolled at the school.
